What is the Difference between a Double Pane Window and a Triple Pane Window?

You may be wondering what type of windows you have in your home and what kind of windows your home needs. If so, you’ve come to the right place! Window Depot Mobile offers premium windows in partnership with ProVia, an award-winning manufacturer of entry door systems and replacement windows. ProVia offers several options for window glazing systems featuring either double or triple pane options, and we’ve broken it all down for you!

Glazing system? What does that even mean?

We’re glad you asked! A window’s glazing system is a simple way of referring to the components in a window’s edges. This includes glass panes, a vapor barrier with a sealant and the space between panes, or the insulation chamber. ProVia windows are all equipped with the ComforTech Warm Edge Glazing System built for durability for any window.

  • In ProVia’s glazing systems, the clear glass in nearly all options features Low-E coating. This provides an increased level of UV protection from the sun.
  • Each system features SuperSpacer Reverser Dual Seal technology as a vapor barrier. This specific technology has warmer temperatures and reduces heat loss and interior condensation. The secret is in using a thermoset foam matrix rather than metal. Overall, you avoid adverse effects caused by condensation, such as damaged wood, peeling paint, and even mold growth!
  • The insulation chamber may contain krypton gas, argon gas, or just air. Both gases are non-toxic and contribute to the window’s insulation.

The ComforTech Warm Edge Glazing System also has enhanced noise reduction, perfect if you live in an industrial environment or have noisy neighbors! When you put it all together, you get a protective window to your home and ENERGY STAR Certified! Pretty awesome, right?

Double pane windows vs. triple pane windows

A double pane window or a triple pane window refers to how many panes of glass are featured in a glazing system. Yep, you guessed it—a double pane window has two panes, and a triple pane window has three! Each system will have an R-value, which refers to its level of resistance against the transfer of heat or cold through its glass. The higher the R-value, the better the glazing system’s insulation prevents heating or cooling loss. Triple pane windows have a higher R-value than double pane windows and will feature either argon or krypton gas. A double pane glazing system will feature either argon gas or air in its insulation chamber.

Which type should I choose for my home?

Triple pane systems can offer greater security sound protection and offer increased energy savings for both your cooling and heating systems. Double pane systems are effective, especially with the addition of a Low- E coating; they can withstand solar heat gain.
